Clients often ask me what email database system to buy. So many head-spinning choices exist, it gets pretty confusing!

Like most systems, it depends on what you’ll use it for. Are you simply searching for a way to distribute the monthly newsletter? Or, do you want to be a serious internet marketer leveraging automated email marketing campaigns, affiliate programs and split testing? Big difference.

On thing advanced internet marketers know is “the power is in the list,” (a.k.a. your email database). Investing in the right database system from the beginning is better for business. This article is for small business owners who wish to be serious internet marketers.

When shopping for an email database system, the most important features to consider are:

(1) AUTORESPONDERS. Autoresponders are a non-negotiable tool for serious internet marketers. They are automatic emails triggered when a person registers for something on your website. Automating your marketing follow-up by using these autoresponders will save you time, money and keep your leads “warm.” NOTE: As of Dec. 2009, Constant Contact allows for only ONE autoreponder. You’ll need more than one if you want to run multiple campaigns.

(2) ALL-IN-ONE USES. It’s a big pain to juggle multiple technologies that don’t integrate with one another. An ideal system includes tools for all your internet marketing and ecommerce goals such as shopping cart, affiliate modules and autoresponders. The best all-in-one systems (like InfusionSoft) integrate with your shopping cart and also include Client Relationship Management (CRM) features to track your sales efforts.

Don’t just think about what you need today. The more you can anticipate what you’ll need later (i.e. “eventually we want to launch an affiliate program”), the better. It’s much easier to activate a module of an existing system than to research and purchase a new system and then figure out how it will integrate with what you already have. When technology platforms don’t integrate with one another it translates into extra time and money paying someone to import records, for example, or doing it yourself. Plus, when human hands are introduced into the process, you’re more susceptible to human error.

(3) SPLIT TESTING. A great email database system will allow you to “split test” your email campaigns. Email split testing involves distributing different versions of an email to different segments of your email database list to find which yields the best results. Email subject lines and their effects on open rates are a typical element to split test.

(4) HELP DESK. OK, you’ve implemented the tools, now what? You’re bound to have questions when setting up these new tools. The best systems have tech support to assist you.

During my 10+ years of working with CRMs, shopping carts and email systems, I’ve personally used Constant Contact, 1Shopping Cart, Infusionsoft, Campaigner, Salesforce, Sugar CRM, iContact, Exact Target, Aweber and Zen Cart. In my opinion, for serious small business internet marketers, InfusionSoft is the best.

It’s important to note that InfusionSoft is more expensive and involves more work to implement. If InfusionSoft isn’t in the budget, my second choice is 1ShoppingCart for its all-in-one shopping cart, autoresponder, split testing and affiliate modules. No system is 100% perfect, and no matter what you choose, there is always a bit of a learning curve.

IMPORTANT NOTE

As an internet marketer, I’ve worked with handfuls of web designers on hundreds of websites for my clients. Just because someone knows how to build a website does not mean (s)he understands internet marketing and email campaigns. I’ve met many web designers who’ve never even run an internet marketing campaign.

These well-meaning web designers may suggest different shopping carts and email databases to integrate with your website, but these systems may not be suitable for a serious internet marketer. Test your web designer’s suggestions against #1-4 above. Remember, the best systems have a help desk. Call them and ask them directly about #1-4 above BEFORE you buy.

Nothing can’t be undone. In my own search for the perfect system, I graduated from using Constant Contact and Salesforce (separately), then 1ShoppingCart, eventually graduating on to InfusionSoft. Don’t beat yourself up! You can change systems if you don’t like the one you’re using, but it will save you some hassles and headaches if you get it right the first time.

The title is not meant to be a euphemism for some adolescent male nocturnal activity but rather a serious point relating to affiliate marketers. When taken at face value, a list when combined with the methods used to build the list, appears to hold little financial worth. However, in my personal opinion it is this very belief which causes most newbie affiliate marketers to simply give up.

The problem stems from the fact that in order to build a reasonable sized list in which to promote your products to you need to attract sufficient visitors to your website or squeeze page before you can capture their email address. Many newbie affiliate marketers don’t have the technical experience or knowledge to really make the most of auto-responder service providers and initially see very little return for their monthly subscription fee. Similarly with knowing how to get the traffic in the first place: Common advice suggests offering something for free like a free report or How To… eBook. While in practice that is exactly what you need to be doing, the simply process of offering a free whatever does not result in instant traffic flowing to your website. Sure, if you can promote your free offer to your list then a percentage of them may well take you up on that free offer so you can capture their details once again. Nonetheless, without a list you are not likely to earn enough to cover the basic costs of operating the website/squeeze page.

So it goes without saying you are going to have to build a list of subscribers and the sooner you start the better. If you want to build a list quickly then you should be prepare to spend, or perhaps a more appropriate word to use would be invest, some serious cash to promote your squeeze page(s). If you are serious about building a list quickly you should read CPA Arbitrage by Chris Cobb. Obviously this may not be available with the most basic of hosting packages but it may be worth your while checking. Perhaps upgrading your package could still save you some cash over using the bigger auto-responder providers such as Aweber or GetResponse – that’s your call.

It is the getting this part right – the ability to create a list – that separates the men from the boys. While I am not exactly suggesting it is not possible to make money as an affiliate marketer without a list, I am suggesting that the list is what is going to make you a lot more money.

Auto responders have been with us for some time now and have had a great impact on internet marketing. Email marketing relies on your marketing emails actually getting to the inbox of your subscriber.

So what really is an auto responder anyway?

It is simply an email program that automatically sends your pre-written emails at pre-determined intervals after a subscriber joins your list by entering their name and email address into your opt in box.

The beautiful thing about auto responders is that once you create your email message series you can switch on autopilot and let your Auto Responder deliver your messages for you daily, every other day or at 4 day intervals or whatever intervals you choose. This allows you time to do other things.

Now, all the time your auto responder is sending out messages it is also collating email addresses of your subscribers (try and beat that if you can). In other words it is building a list of your subscribers. It also has a facility for them to automatically “unsubscribe” if they wish to. In fact you must make it easy for your subscribers to leave your list just as easy as it was for them to join it. Failure to do this is in breach of the CAN SPAM laws. You do not want to deal with SPAM complaints.

On a side note I have subscribed to certain lists and discovered there was no unsubscribe facility or the unsubscribe link was very far down the page. It seemed like a ploy to make sure you do not unsubscribe. Now, I have no idea if this was deliberate or not but I sure thought it was crazy to leave oneself open to spam complaints. It is quite frustrating when you can’t unsubscribe. My advice is this, don’t make it difficult for your subscribers to leave if they want to.

This type of unethical or careless marketing only leads to spam complaints from cheesed off subscribers. It is not worth the risk just for the sake of keeping people on your list. If they do not ant to be on your list then let them unsubscribe. This way you keep your list clean.

Anyway, the service I use – Aweber renders Spamming near impossible as it uses a “Verified Opt In”, known more commonly as “Double Opt In”. The Auto Responder you choose must be capable of doing same.

Auto responders are a great internet marketing tool if you use them well they will serve you well however falling foul of the spam laws could mean the death of your online business.

I have always been impressed with those affiliate marketers who can send out an email and make tens of thousands of dollars from one product promotion. I mean they write an email with a great headline, they write a few follow up emails to be sent out at predetermined intervals to help entice those who did not purchase on the first email.

The next thing you know their bank account is a whole lot fatter than it was before. Fatter at least as far as common people are concerned. Most super affiliates probably think they made a good days pay. Most common people which include beginner marketers would jump out of their boots to make that much money that quickly. Some of you who are new to this may like me to answer what is an autoresponder? Autoresponders are programs that automatically respond to your emails without so much as having to click on your mouse. An autoresponder can come in a few different types. One type is known as a service. A service usually is purchased monthly and is stored on that service’s server. This system is great for beginners and pros alike. It is easy to use and has a professional look about them.

Some autoresponder services offer a free autoresponder but they have advertisements go out in the email you send. This is not very professional looking. The autoresponder services usually require a comfirmation for the user to be added to your list. This may seem harder to get prospects to join your list but it is important for spam laws. Besides, it gives you a more targeted and devoted list.

The paid and free services usually have backup servers in case something goes wrong with the main server. This helps protect your list from getting lost.

Another type of autoresponder system is a script that you can load on your own server. Some pro’s use this type of program which gives them more control. They can eliminate the need for the prospect to confirm joining their list in their email.

Another autoresponder program is available free in most hosting accounts. You do not have much flexibility with these autoresponders. They are OK for simple messages but I would not suggest this type if you are planning to be competitive on the internet.

Let me give you an example of an autoresponder and how it works. I will use a specific service in order to make it easier for you to follow along and for me to explain. You have a website or blog and you want to begin to start a list. You open your aweber account and click on list, then click on create and manage list, then create a new list. You fill in all the necessary information to start a list. The service will walk you through it.

Now you have your list made up in Aweber. Now add your follow up message. It could be your newsletter, your free ebook, a free report, whatever useful information you have that someone would want to join your list.

Now you click on web forms and create web form. Aweber will walk you through this process. You copy your html code and place the html snippet on your website or blog in the appropriate location.

Now your ready to grow your list. When people fill out their name and email on your website or blog, your autoresponder service will ask them to confirm their information by clicking a link in an email it sends out. When the subscriber confirms the service collects their information and automatically sends them your follow up letter you had previously loaded.

Whenever you have something important you wish to send out to the people you have collected on your list you just login to your autoresponder account and write up the information which could include affiliate links or products you have. You can now send that information to your entire list by pressing the send button. As your list grows you can see how an autoresponder can take your internet business to the next level.

Now you know how an auto responder works, it is time for you to take action. This is the most important step. Doing it. It is time to start building your list. Start your newsletter, write a great report that your website visitors would find very useful. Write a great ebook or have it written for you.
