In the world of domain name, there is an act of buying a domain name and selling a domain name. These acts are so usual that many domain name patrons and holders are into it a a small number of years after the beginning of domain name in the world of the internet. Nowadays, as domain names continues to become a commodity; many people have particular needs to buy a domain name and particularly to sell a domain name.

Generally, to sell a domain name, which is the main motivation of this article, involves a not so easy process. If buying a domain name involves some processes, to sell a domain name is also to undergo different steps.

According to many domain name experts, there are really certain purposes why a certain domain name possessor or companies sell a domain name. It is a widespread note that many of them just purchased a domain name for the purpose of reselling it. Most of the domain name holders sell a domain name after finding that it has no use for them, or perhaps when the third party shows some interest in buying it.

Given such fact, it is then a nice move if you have certain longing to sell a domain name that prior to getting down to the hard work that is essential to sell a domain name, you know how to place some sorts of assessment on your domain name. In fact, even if you are not going to post or publicize the set value of the domain name, it is still considerable that you are aware of the minimum amount that you would accept for it when you sell a domain name.

When you need to sell a domain name, you should take note that there are primarily two major means to sell a domain name. The first way for you to sell a domain name is to look for a buyer yourself or what the other call as a private business deal. From the name itself, it is clear that this way to sell a domain name is strictly between the buyer and the seller, of course with no third party involved in the transaction. Knowing such fact, it is then a very important thing that there is a altitude of trust between the parties, for the fact that a party is naturally waiting while the transfer agreement is utterly done and the amount is sent to the seller.

On the other hand, the second way to sell a domain name is to use a party or party to find a buyer on your behalf. Many people deal with this way to sell a domain name as using an escrow service. In here, you are applying a third party that will fundamentally embrace to the buyers payment while the trade is totally done. As such, both the side of the buyer and the seller is protected. However, one of the bad impressions for the escrow service to sell a domain name is that you are putting another step to the process involves in the longing to sell a domain name, and another cost.

But in spite of the path you choose to follow with your wish to sell a domain name, it is just required that you take some extra care, since when selling a domain name it is a typical condition that you rarely meet your buyer face to face.

Automated Volume Buying.

Automated volume buying, is simply that; using an application to automatically search for available domains that meet your pre-set criteria, and purchasing the domains that result from the search. Automated volume buying requires, first and foremost, an reliable application to take your search criteria and conduct the searches. While there are a number of domain research tools available for purchase, many top domainers use a customized version. No matter which volume buying tool you’re using, however, they all work in roughly the same way by allowing you to search WHOIS servers and filter results by keywords, Overture price ranges, search engine results, etc. So, for example, you could filter your potential domains by those that have a minimum of 1000 keyword searches per month and which yielded more than a top bid of a dollar on Overture. While it is certainly true that now that more people are using automated volume buying tools the easiest bargains are usually taken, domainers can still find a great haul of cheap .com’s as long as they stay ahead of the curve by getting creative with their filter criteria.

Trendwatching.

If you’re looking for a domaining strategy that is longer-term but that can be highly lucrative, you might think of trying trendwatching. Trendwatching is simply the practice of anticipating popular domains before they become well known. The keys to successful trendwatching are reliable sources and creativity. One of the biggest mistakes novice domainers make, is attempting to trendwatch a very diverse group of industries, rather than focusing on a few and becoming an expert in those areas. The best way to start trendwatching is to pick two or three niches that you feel comfortable with and which are reasonably lucrative, then add 8 to 10 blogs within that niche to your RSS feed. Bloglines, Newsgator, and Google Reader are all free web-based feed readers, just in case you are unfamiliar with RSS. If you’re in a competitive niche, time is of the essence, so regularly check your feed for information on rising stars, new technologies, burgeoning trends or hot products, and once you hear of the trend, pounce on it immediately by buying up some relevant domains. In addition to RSS feeds, Google Trends can also help keep you on top of developing trends by showing relative query volume for one to five keywords or phrases. One thing to keep in mind when trendwatching, is that not every predicted trend will pan out, so anticipate plenty of total losses for every big hit. As a consequence, it is important to keep your domain holdings diversified, so that you aren’t too heavily invested in a single trend, and thus you can afford to wait out the staggering returns when one of your trend predictions proves true.

Even though a lot of people now realize that the word domain refers to the address of a website, some do not understand other words or tech-jargon associated with the term domain. So here is a quick look at two popular terms that are associated with domains, in case you or someone you know could use some help.

Domain Forwarding & Masking

Domain forwarding helps with the directing of your site link to the address of another website. And domain forwarding is very helpful for websites that may have longer, more complex addresses as well as for advertising purposes; for example, to use a new domain like MarchSale2007(dot)com for directing traffic to a special sales web page.

The forwarding process is pretty simple. Begin by registering the new domain name of your choice that’s available. Next log into the domain area where you purchased your domain and click on the option to forward this new domain. A space should become available then where you simply insert the URL or domain name of the site where you want your visitors to be directed when they click the link.

Domain masking allows you to hide or protect the address of your website while still continuing to allow your prospects and clients to visit your site and access the contents there. Domain masking works in this manner:

- Register your domain name first. For example, register the domain name, TinyURL(dot)com or the domain of your choice. Then set up a forward as mentioned above and add masking to it by clicking the masking box in the control area and add masked description meta tag and masked keyword meta tag words to help direct search engines your way when people key in these terms for searches.

- Although TinyURL(dot)com will be the visual address for people who click on the link, it will not be the main Internet address of the website because the main address is too long with too many letters to list in print ads, for example, like MyDomainNameIsTooLong(dot)com. Therefore the masked domain address TinyURL(dot)com will be listed in emails, ads and other communications to direct Internet visitors to the site. And your website visitors need only key in the address TinyURL(dot)com to discover all the content of the main address at: MyDomainNameIsTooLong(dot)com on their computers.

Note that the main difference between domain forwarding and domain masking is that with domain forwarding, your site visitors will still see the original or actual domain name in their browser after they click the new domain link and get directed to the site. In other words, the new domain link does not hide the long original name. So when people click: TinyURL(dot)com, they are directed to the site, yet once they arrive at the site, the domain that appears in their browsers will read: MyDomainNameIsTooLong(dot)com.

Why would you prefer to place a mask over the original address rather than simply forward traffic to the site? In cases like this:

Some website addresses are very long, full of coding with numbers and letters that often may or may not make sense like: http://ThisIsYourAffiliateLinkabczyx12379_JohnSmith(dot)com . So to make the link easier to read and to look more professional, an Internet marketer may mask a short domain like http://JohnSmithNews(dot)com for two reasons (1) to hide the fact that it’s an affiliate link, causing some to be uneasy and leave the site right away and get in touch with the main seller instead and (2) to make the site appear more professional and memorable with a recognizable name as the address.

Domain name registration prices are a market that is pretty well balanced. There are higher and lower prices with various companies, but in general they are within a few dollars of one another. Where the prices of domain name registration can really be compared is within the area of number of domains, number of years, and the extentions. So here is a little bit about domain name registration prices compared based on the length of time, number of domains, and the extention the name has.

The first part of domain name registration prices compared is the number of domains that you are registering. With most any reputable registration company, you will get a better price per domain with more domain names registered at the same time. So in order to get the best price you will generally need to register hundreds of domains. You can expect to save as much as 11% if you register in bulk with your domain registrar.

An alternative to consider when domain name registration prices are compared is the number of years you register for at the same time. For instance, if you register for just one year you may only pay four dollars, but if you register your domain name for 10 years you could save quite a few dollars per year. That is not to say you should always register for several years, but that you should register for the most number of years that make sense for you. Consider how big of a commitment you want to make to the name and then how much you want to spend on the registration. Remember, even though you will pay more, you can always renew as your time frame for registration ends.

The third factor and one that many do not think about, when domain name registration prices are compared is the extention of the domain you take. There are in fact a number of extentions now existing on the internet, from the traditional .com to the less well known .ws and .tv extentions. Now not only do you have to be eligible for certain extentions, but also there are different prices connected with each one. As a common rule, .com, .net, and .org are the cheapest domains and are usually under $10 each. The most expensive is usually .ws or .us, which can run you up over $20 per year. However, you do have to remember that the other factors will affect the price as well. So if you look to register for 5-10 years you will find that sometimes those .tv or .ws extentions can be as little as one or two years with a .biz or .info Top Level Domain.

The tiny Polynesian island nation of Niue is beginning to think it’s been had. Frankly, it’s clear they didn’t do their homework before they did their agreement.

Ironically, it seems the buyer hadn’t really done his, either. Anyone who has been swamped by advertisements for ‘global domains’ can certainly understand that it’s a rapidly increasing business. The specter of purchasing a domain at a much better price than the more common ‘dot com’ or ‘dot net’ or ‘dot org’ is most attractive to most aspiring entrepeneurs on restricted budgets. This niche’s market leader is most likely Global Domains International (GDI), which has no doubt put Western Samoa on the mental map of many a cybernaut. The key aspect in that deal is that the Western Samoan government granted the rights to GDI in return for a percentage for every domain sold.

Niue’s name is consequent from the local language’s phrase for, “Look, a coconut!” It seems they should have used theirs more carefully before signing a domain deal with Bill Semich in 1998.

An American entrepreneur whose former station was editor for a computer magazine, Semich recognized the potential value in the marketability of unique domains. Apparently finding the ‘nu’ extension an eye-catching letter arrangement, he signed a contract with the Niue government that gave him the private rights to it.

It wasn’t a one-way deal. Semich guaranteed free wireless access for all 2000 of Niue’s people and he delivered, carrying out the system of an island-wide set-up of translator towers in 2003. The country’s leaders surely felt they had provided their population with a service for the new century which would positively ensconce their place in island history.

Semich, meanwhile, intended to hawk his bargain domains to Americans. He had no idea that his ideal clients were in Sweden, where ‘nu’ is the local word for ‘now.’

Clearly,’now’ is a hot advertising action term in any language, so Semich was pleasantly surprised to find the Swedes flocking to his cyber-property. As a translated example of why this works for them, ‘drive.now’ (which would be ‘köra.nu’) is a very compelling sales slogan which becomes an perfect URL for a Swedish driving school. To date, Semich has had 110,000 sales of ‘dot nu’ domains at $30 a year, which has considerably swollen the coffers of his ‘.NU Domain Ltd’ to the level that its website’s home page default language is now — or nu — in Swedish.

Moreover, Semich has cunningly taken advantage of this windfall to become the first domain provider to include a complete Unicode character set into its scripts, allowing users whose alphabets have unique characters — in Swedish, that would be the letters ‘å,’ ‘ä’ and ‘ö’ — to remain true to their language instead of settling for Anglicized versions, which often destroy their original meaning.
