Maybe it has slipped your attention, but the most often used approach to making money on the web is to have a website. Then next logical thought is you’ll need to people to actually find your site. So the term you always see for your site’s visitors is “traffic.” This is because the more people who see your site, the more likely you are to make sales and earn money. Just like applying for a job, you want to make as much as possible – so that is the point to it all. Here are a few things that you can do to increase your website’s traffic (and, potentially, your profit margin!).

Submit your site to link directories. You should not just submit your site to random directories, but only to ones that are privately owned and consistently moderated. You can submit your site to many directories for free. Links from these directories are great because they can increase your site’s page rank. More importantly, because the sites are moderated and have to be approved, people who use these directories automatically trust the sites that are listed within them. This can give you some immediate traffic when visitors to these directories click through to look at your site.

Seek out writers and website owners who can contribute relevant content such as articles to your site and ask them for contributions. Offer them a link back to their own websites in exchange for a few hundred words on your niche topic. This is good for two reasons. Your page rank can go up by having more outbound links. This will also give you an inbound link, which is also beneficial. If you publish someone’s article on your site, they will want to tell their own readers about this; when they do this, they’ll have to include a link to the article, which is, of course on your website, providing you with a link. So this technique gives you links that are both inbound and outbound, and you can also get traffic directly from the site of the person who contributed the article!

Find some newsletters in your niche area. Ask the newsletter creators if you might submit an article or two to the newsletter. You’re not doing this for direct payment, you’re doing it for exposure of your name and your website to the audience. You’ll find a lot of publishers will agree to this if your content is good and well-written. And if it all goes well, you could end up with a good writing gig.

Generating traffic to your site isn’t all that hard, and there are so many ways to do it. But it’s a process that is always continuing and neverending. Traffic building plus backlink building are two things that should be worked on everyday. There’s so much to do, and that will help make it less boring. So maybe just think in terms of the money those efforts will bring you.
