Studies show that most people need to be exposed to a sales message 5-8 times before they’ll consider purchase. This is why auto responders are so important to Internet Marketing. Which ones have you wanting to open the email and read more? Which ones really had you opening the email to read it? Those are the ones you’ll want to pattern your own subject lines after.

What to Say

The primary thing to remember is tell the reader what he wants to know. For example, if you’re selling a piece of software, the prospective customer could care less how long it took to develop or how much it cost in time and money to create the software. He might not even care about all the features and how they work. What he’s interested in is what’s in it for him!

Each and every letter in your auto responder series should highlight one or more benefits your reader will derive from using your product. Each letter can explain one benefit in detail, or you can describe several benefits. Don’t worry about repeating yourself! Repetition is actually important, which is something you won’t hear in writing class. Here, you need to get a point across. One great way to do that is repeat it over and over again. Human nature makes us start to believe anything we hear often enough. Use that!

How Often, How Long?

Again, think about your own thought processes as you read sales letters that come to you. Most people will read emails that are short and to the point more readily than they’ll peruse long ones. How often do you carefully read every word of a multi-page sales letter? Do you skim instead? I do! Long letters aren’t necessarily bad, but break them up with subtitles or even graphics. Add some color with html, if you can. These kinds of things will make skimming easier, and will encourage people to read the detail, once the subtitles, colors and graphics grab their attention.

As for how often your letters should be sent, a line must be recognized and walked carefully. Send too many purely sales emails to your list and they’ll start unsubscribing in droves. But if you leave too much space between letters, you risk losing the benefit of prior exposures to your message. I like to send each message 2-3 days after the last. Vary it a bit. Intersperse the sales series with a good, related content message, perhaps with a link to your sales page somewhere inside.

When I received my Bachelors Degree from Saint Leo University back in 1993, the online world did not exist as we know it. Many websites were in existence, but the majority were nothing like today’s websites with flash and video. This software is either run on your own server or you log in to a main server and set up your emails. By far the least complicated way to use an autoresponder is to sign up for a monthly hosted plan at a reputable company that devotes resources to making certain your emails get delivered. What happens in these times is that many people sign up for something at 3AM to get a free report, they download the report and then go to sleep, forgetting that they are now on a newsletter. The next day when they get an email from that newsletter, they think it is someone spamming them, so they click on the “Report Spam” button in their email client, where the client (in the cases of Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail) reports this offending email to some of the spam reduction services. When you place an ad, you are at the mercy of the timing of the medium. It used to take a couple weeks to get an ad in the print media, and months to get on radio and television. I have seen movie theaters have to turn away people because the time in the paper did not coincide with the actual time in the theater, or maybe a movie was no longer playing, but the paper ran it again.

With direct response ads using your autoresponder, if you are seeing a pattern that Wednesdays are very slow, you can send out a blast to your preferred customers (they signed up for your newsletter, you should prefer those that do) that only Wednesday, they just need to mention the email and get $2 off each admission! All of a sudden, the theater has more people than they can handle on Wednesdays and they are selling tons of popcorn because their preferred customers just saved $2!

Reason 3: Trackability

When you place an ad in the newspaper, radio and local television you are not going to be able to tell how they found out about you unless you ask. Often, people may not remember how they found out about you. But with a direct response ad, you can often tell because they are using the code you sent them, or they printed out your email. If you place coupons in the paper, you can track those, but when you are sending an email on Wednesday and you use a special code for that ad, you can see which ad brought the customer in.

Specials that you make only to your preferred customers, are very easy to track, and they also have an extra benefit. People talk about them. When two people are waiting at the window and one has an email printed out, they will get asked about the deal that they just received. An autoresponderone is essential because if you don’t have one, you won’t have a mailing list. You can’t build a profitable list without it. My autoresponder is a means of creating conversation between my subscribers and me. Often the conversation will occur elsewhere, not by email – sometimes on social networking sites. Clients often ask me what email database system to buy. So many head-spinning choices exist, it gets pretty confusing!

Like most systems, it depends on what you’ll use it for. Are you simply searching for a way to distribute the monthly newsletter? Or, do you want to be a serious internet marketer leveraging automated email marketing campaigns, affiliate programs and split testing? Big difference.

On thing advanced internet marketers know is “the power is in the list,” (a.k.a. your email database). Investing in the right database system from the beginning is better for business. This article is for small business owners who wish to be serious internet marketers.

When shopping for an email database system, the most important features to consider are:

(1) AUTORESPONDERS. Autoresponders are a non-negotiable tool for serious internet marketers. They are automatic emails triggered when a person registers for something on your website. Automating your marketing follow-up by using these autoresponders will save you time, money and keep your leads “warm.” NOTE: As of Dec. 2009, Constant Contact allows for only ONE autoreponder. You’ll need more than one if you want to run multiple campaigns.

(2) ALL-IN-ONE USES. It’s a big pain to juggle multiple technologies that don’t integrate with one another. An ideal system includes tools for all your internet marketing and ecommerce goals such as shopping cart, affiliate modules and autoresponders. The best all-in-one systems (like InfusionSoft) integrate with your shopping cart and also include Client Relationship Management (CRM) features to track your sales efforts.

Don’t just think about what you need today. The more you can anticipate what you’ll need later (i.e. “eventually we want to launch an affiliate program”), the better. It’s much easier to activate a module of an existing system than to research and purchase a new system and then figure out how it will integrate with what you already have. When technology platforms don’t integrate with one another it translates into extra time and money paying someone to import records, for example, or doing it yourself. Plus, when human hands are introduced into the process, you’re more susceptible to human error.

(3) SPLIT TESTING. A great email database system will allow you to “split test” your email campaigns. Email split testing involves distributing different versions of an email to different segments of your email database list to find which yields the best results. Email subject lines and their effects on open rates are a typical element to split test.

(4) HELP DESK. OK, you’ve implemented the tools, now what? You’re bound to have questions when setting up these new tools. The best systems have tech support to assist you.

During my 10+ years of working with CRMs, shopping carts and email systems, I’ve personally used Constant Contact, 1Shopping Cart, Infusionsoft, Campaigner, Salesforce, Sugar CRM, iContact, Exact Target, Aweber and Zen Cart. In my opinion, for serious small business internet marketers, InfusionSoft is the best.

It’s important to note that InfusionSoft is more expensive and involves more work to implement. If InfusionSoft isn’t in the budget, my second choice is 1ShoppingCart for its all-in-one shopping cart, autoresponder, split testing and affiliate modules. No system is 100% perfect, and no matter what you choose, there is always a bit of a learning curve.

IMPORTANT NOTE

As an internet marketer, I’ve worked with handfuls of web designers on hundreds of websites for my clients. Just because someone knows how to build a website does not mean (s)he understands internet marketing and email campaigns. I’ve met many web designers who’ve never even run an internet marketing campaign.

These well-meaning web designers may suggest different shopping carts and email databases to integrate with your website, but these systems may not be suitable for a serious internet marketer. Test your web designer’s suggestions against #1-4 above. Remember, the best systems have a help desk. Call them and ask them directly about #1-4 above BEFORE you buy.

Nothing can’t be undone. In my own search for the perfect system, I graduated from using Constant Contact and Salesforce (separately), then 1ShoppingCart, eventually graduating on to InfusionSoft. Don’t beat yourself up! You can change systems if you don’t like the one you’re using, but it will save you some hassles and headaches if you get it right the first time.
